"We brought together officials from Ukraine and Russia at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, hoping to achieve peace. But the United States wanted the war to continue," Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, former Foreign Minister of Türkiye, said during the panel discussion on "Geopolitical Shifts: Responsible Partnerships versus Rivalry" at the 12th Global Baku Forum, APA reports.
He noted that some EU countries supported Türkiye's proposal, but full support was not given.
Çavuşoğlu also commented on the situation in Syria: "We are working to assist the new government and help in the country's reconstruction. A new era has begun in Syria, and Türkiye is striving to ensure that the transitional government’s efforts do not lead to a disaster. President Erdoğan is very active in resolving the issues in this region. Erdoğan is the number one politician who maintains relations and works with all parties. It is not enough to work only with regional powers. However, regional powers can take more realistic steps in resolving conflicts. We are a NATO member, but we have good relations with Russia. In the early stages, a NATO member Türkiye’s dialogue with Russia was not welcomed. However, if Türkiye's steps had been supported at that time, instead of the war lasting for years, we could have achieved a ceasefire in the early stages and ensured Ukraine's security."
